Beyond Books: Shaping Futures Through Skills and Possibilities
On the 28th of April 2026, Leo Club of the University of Colombo successfully conducted the third phase of project, Together as Humans 8.0 – Shilpa Yathra, at VijayabaVidyalaya, Grandpass. This impactful initiative focused on empowering young minds through awareness of vocational education and career guidance, in collaboration with the National Youth Services Council.
The session brought together 50 students from Grades 9, 10, and 11, creating a dynamic and interactive learning environment. At a crucial stage in their academic journey, these students were provided with valuable insights into alternative educational pathways beyond traditional academics. The program aimed to broaden their perspectives and encourage them to explore diverse career opportunities aligned with their skills, interests, and future aspirations.
Representatives from the National Youth Services Council played a vital role in delivering the session. They introduced students to various vocational training programs available in Sri Lanka, highlighting the importance of skill-based education in today’s competitive world. From technical fields to creative industries, students were guided on how vocational education can serve as a strong foundation for sustainable and fulfilling careers.
The session was designed to be highly engaging, with interactive discussions, real-life examples, and practical guidance. Students were encouraged to ask questions, share their thoughts, and actively participate in conversations about their future goals. This open platform allowed them to gain clarity, confidence, and motivation in making informed decisions about their career paths. Moreover, we donated books to school library.“Shilpa Yathra” stands as a testament to the Leo Club’s commitment to community development and youth empowerment. By addressing the knowledge gap surrounding vocational opportunities, the project not only educated students but also inspired them to recognize their potential beyond conventional boundaries.
The success of this phase was made possible through the dedication and teamwork of the Leo Club members, as well as the valuable partnership with the National Youth Services Council. Their combined efforts ensured that the session was both informative and impactful.Together as Humans 8.0 continues to create meaningful change, one step at a time.
