Safe Steps – Phase 03: සුව මංපෙත්
Safe Steps – Phase 03: සුව මංපෙත්
On April 30, 2026, from 8.30 a.m. to approximately 1.00 p.m., Leo Club of the University of Colombo successfully carried out the third phase of the Safe Steps Project under the theme “සුව මංපෙත්,” along the Baseline Road in the Orugodawatta–Dematagoda area.
Baseline Road was carefully selected for this initiative as it is a highly congested and accident-prone area. Many road signs along this stretch had become unclear due to dust, weather conditions, and lack of maintenance, making it difficult for drivers and pedestrians to follow proper road guidance. Upon our request, the Road Development Authority also recommended this location as a priority area, further highlighting the importance of timely intervention.
The project began with a visit to the Road Development Authority unit, where we received immense support in organizing the initiative. They provided transportation, cleaning equipment, materials, and most importantly, the support of their workers. Their guidance played a key role in ensuring the smooth execution of the project.
One of the key highlights of this phase was the establishment of an awareness board designed to deliver an emotional and impactful message about road safety. This board was placed near the Welikada Prison at a busy four-way junction, a location where a large number of vehicles and pedestrians pass daily. The intention was not just to inform, but to make people pause, reflect, and think about their responsibility on the road.
Following this, the team moved on to cleaning unclear road signs along Baseline Road. With the combined efforts of Leo Club members and the workers of the Road Development Authority, a significant number of road signs were cleaned and restored. What seemed like a simple act brought a visible and meaningful change — clearer signs, better guidance, and a safer environment for road users.
The project also received valuable appreciation and encouragement from the Road Development Authority supervisor, as well as the Immediate District Past President, who joined the initiative. Their presence and positive feedback motivated the team and highlighted the impact of the work carried out.
This phase was more than just a cleanup or an
installation project. It was a step towards building responsible road users and
safer communities through awareness and action. By addressing both the physical
condition of road signs and the mindset of road users, “සුව
මංපෙත්” aimed to create a lasting
impact.
