Be Their Vision 8.0- Second Phase
"Life To a Dead Eye" - Pledge to donate your eyes and give life to two people
We would like to humbly and proudly announce that the Leo Club of the University of Colombo "Be Their Vision 8.0" project was held this year for the 8th time. This project targets visually impaired and blind people and the main objective is to improve their welfare and well-being. We are happy to announce that the second phase of the "Be Their Vision" project, which consists of 3 phases, has been completed successfully.
An Eye Donation Campaign is selected for the second phase of the "Be Their Vision 8.0" project called "Life to A Dead Eye". It was done on the 24th and 31st March 2024 at Timbirigasaya Ashokarama in the Colombo district. This phase was carried out in collaboration with the Sri Lanka Eye Donation Society and the Leo Club of the University of Colombo.
Sri
Lanka’s cornea supply is unusual. A global survey carried out in 2012 and 2013
by the U.S.-based National Institutes of Health revealed a lack of corneas
around the world, with just one cornea available for every 70 needed. About 53
per cent of the world’s population has no access to corneal transplantation,
the report revealed.
Under
the second phase of the "Be Their Vision 8.0" project, blind people
will be given the opportunity to undergo corneal transplantation to regain
their sight, and also provide that valuable opportunity to people who wish to
donate their eyes and hope to donate their eyes. In this phase, people
interested in eye donation were registered by filling out the forms given by
the Sri Lanka Eye Donation Society.
We
must express our gratitude to all the parties who have contributed to the
successful and effective completion of the second phase of the Be Their Vision
project.
First
of all, we would like to thank the director, doctors and entire staff of the
Sri Lanka Eye Donation Society for coming forward for the success of the
project. Also, we express our gratitude to all who generously supported our
program, including the chief monk of the Timbirigasaya Ashokaramaya. The
committee members of the "Be Their Vision" project played an
important role by devoting themselves to its success and therefore we would
like to highly appreciate them.
In
this way, we are very happy to inform you that this great social service for
the blind people held at the Thimbirigasyaya Ashokaramaya on March 24th and
31st, 2024 has been completed by the Leo Club of the University of Colombo in a
great way.
By,
Leo Himali Herath.
