Sindunala Raksha 7.0 - Phase I
For our first phase, we chose to conduct an underwater cleanup along with a beach cleanup to protect marine and coastal environments from harmful debris such as plastics, glass, and metal. Our project took place in Unawatuna, a location rich in biodiversity, situated in the southern region, on March 23rd, 2024, organized by the Leo Club of the University.
Initially,
we engaged in a beach cleanup along the coast of Unawatuna, successfully
collecting 37 kilograms of waste. This included plastic bottles, glass bottles,
polythene covers, plastic bags, and beer cans, highlighting the diverse nature
of the pollution problem.
Following
the beach cleanup, our team of four divers, Sarani Ranweera, Supun Fernando,
Tharushi Disanayake, and Sajani Gamage, prepared for the underwater cleanup.
After a short break, we commenced the underwater cleanup, with Sarani Ranaweera
leading the effort. Over one and a half hours, we retrieved an additional 76
kilograms of debris, contributing significantly to marine conservation efforts.
After completing both cleanups, we took time to discuss and reflect with our participants and divers, who expressed satisfaction with our efforts. We also expressed our gratitude by presenting them with tokens of appreciation. With the support of Earth Lanka, Sri Lanka Divers Unawatuna, and Beemo Ecomart, our project was successfully implemented.
In
summary, Project Sindunala Raksha 7.0 demonstrates the power of collaborative
action in addressing environmental challenges and underscores the dedication of
its participants to protecting marine ecosystems. Working as a marvelous team,
we not only accomplished our goals but also had fun in the process.
