Miles of Smiles 5.0 - Phase III
Donating laboratory equipment and conducting a session about how to effectively use those types of laboratory equipment.
We completed the third and as well as final phase of the "Miles of Smiles 5.0" project, which is carried out for the benefit of the children, on April 1st, 2024. The project was conducted at Methodist High School, Puwakaramba, Moratuwa. It is a school which has around 2000 students. However, we found that they lack some laboratory equipment in their school laboratory. It hindered those school students from getting a more effective education. Then we decided to donate that equipment to the school laboratory.
On the project implementation day, first, there was the customary lighting of the oil lamp and remembrance of religion to signal the start of the celebrations. Then the principal of the school addressed the gathering. After that, our project chairperson handed over the laboratory equipment to the school principal. We donated them a light microscope, a pH meter, a hydrometer, red and blue litmus papers, and pH buffer solutions. Then the next valuable part of the event started. It is the session led by a fourth-year undergraduate student of the faculty of technology at the University of Colombo. It was an interactive session on how to effectively use those types of laboratory equipment while doing some practical exercises involving some of the school students too. The students in the grade 10 class took part in this event. The students were actively involved in that.
As the guest of honour of the event, Mr. Lion Indika Gomes MJF MAF, the District Chairperson of Environment Project joined with us on that day. At the end of the day, some leaflets about diabetes awareness were distributed by Leo District 306c1, among the school students. Then the guest of honour of the event, Mr. Lion Indika Gomes MJF MAF addressed the gathering and appreciated the project members for doing such a valuable thing. Then our project chairperson, Leo Janani Chiranga delivered the vote of thanks and distributed the commemorative plaque mugs to Mr. Lion Indika Gomes MJF MAF and the school principal, as appreciating their support for this project.
To fulfil this task, we got help from a lot of parties. Among them, we need to especially thank Mr. Lion Indika Gomes MJF MAF for donating some of the laboratory equipment which donated, and also, we need to be thankful to “Vivid Vibe” company and “Nitmo Kitchen” company for sponsoring the project.
We believe that all the students in that school, both current and potential, will greatly benefit from that laboratory equipment. They were grateful to the Leo Club of University of Colombo for our invaluable work and said that having those tools in their laboratory is incredibly helpful and will be a key milestone in developing those students’ education.
Finally, we would like to express our sincere gratitude to Methodist High School, our beloved other Leos, and all the kind people who supported this worthy cause, whether it was with money or their invaluable time. We especially thank our project committee members, who greatly contributed to the success of this event. Together, we have penned an important chapter that holds forth the prospect of education for these children.
By,
Leo Madhuka Amandi.
