Diabcure 6.0 - Phase III
Raising Awareness: Promoting awareness and control of Diabetes in the elderly: A community initiative.
The greatest wealth is health. As a society, we should be concerned about the health of the elderly living in the twilight years. Diabetes is a serious threat to the health of the elderly. It is estimated that 8.7% of the elderly in Sri Lanka suffer from diabetes. Due to diabetes, the elderly face many side effects. On March 25, 2024, at the Horana Maithee elders Home, a step was taken under the Diabcure 6.0 Project, which is being conducted under the Leo Club of the University of Colombo.
It started on March 25, 2024 at around 9 am and continued till 5 pm. The clinic was conducted in the morning and contributed by Dr. W Mahatantri and Dr. B.A.H.E Balachandra. Through that clinic, new diabetic patients were identified and doctors provided advice and medicines to those patients.
Also, adults who are already suffering from diabetes were informed. During the clinic, we arranged to provide a medicated porridge for the elderly. After conducting the clinic in the morning with the doctors, they gave gifts and sent them away happily. The doctors were very happy to be involved in this project.
Although drugs can be given for physical ailments, there are still no specific drugs identified for depression and mental illnesses. Mental healing is the best medicine a man can get throughout his life. In the evening, the members of the Leo club, about implemented an entertainment program for adults. There all the elders are very happy and the program was made more interesting by their dancing and singing.
It was the aim of all of us to do service in honor of the elders who have done service for the country, for the society and for the future. We have successfully achieved that goal through this project.
