Emma Watson once said, “it is time that we all see gender as a spectrum instead of two sets of opposing ideals”. Hence there is a need to motivate girls and women to pursue their goals and success by overcoming gender stereotypes and preconceptions. And also, women in Sri Lankan society face a variety of difficulties in their daily life. Out of all of these difficulties, the issue of "violence against women" in the modern world has to be brought to society's notice.

As Leos, we took the initiative to provide an opportunity for individuals to express their own ideas on gender equality and raise awareness about gender equality in the Sri Lankan context and about protecting women’s and girls’ rights against violence through digital media.

We as Leo Club of University of Colombo, Leo District 306 C1, conducted the first phase of project Diyani 6.0 “Liya Abhimana” during the months of February and March 2023, under two programs. One program was a social media awareness campaign which was conducted with participants who shared their opinions regarding gender equality. The other program was a YouTube video series done in the Sinhala language that was conducted to increase the project's value in spreading awareness to the public. Professor Arosha Adikaram Professor (Chair) at the Department of Human Resource Management, Faculty of Management and Finance at University of Colombo conducted the first episode of the YouTube series on "Current status of gender equality in Sri Lanka" it discussed what gender equality is, its benefits, how to promote gender equity at the organizational level, the roles of men and women in promoting gender equity, and how the religious and social context of Sri Lanka affects gender equality.

The second episode of the YouTube series was conducted by Attorney at Law, Ms. Kiruli Ransalu, which addressed violence, why should it be addressed in Sri Lanka, how should attitudes be changed to minimize violence, what resources are available to get assistance, what are the responsibilities of an individual to protect themselves and recommendations from the legal perspective under the title “Legal aspect of protection of women and girls in Sri Lanka”. Hence project committee was able to complete this phase, by enabling individuals to provide an avenue for their opinions, and raise awareness of current issues that affect women in the Sri Lankan community.
