PROJECT NISAGINI 5.0 – PHASE 3
The third phase of the Project “NISAGINI 5.0” consists of two segments: “Taste-off!” and “සෙනෙහසේ දෑත්”. The first segment, “Taste-off!” is a cooking competition for school children implemented with the aim of making them aware of nutritious food practices, food safety, and avoidance of food poisoning and practically developing their interest towards nutritious meals, increasing the awareness and continuing the habits of healthy foods and healthy lifestyle among teenagers. Many children and the public community are not aware of nutritious meals and healthy lifestyles.
The grade 8 students and scouts members of C.W.W.kannangara Central College, Mathugama, were the beneficiaries of the first segment. There were 13 groups with 2 competitors in each. Three groups were selected as winners by expert judgement and proper marking guidelines. Students were fully aware of the importance of nutritious food, promoting food safety and preventing food poisoning, developing practical skills in preparing nutritious meals, and encouraging a lifelong habit of healthy eating.
Children were given money to provide necessary equipment and ingredients. They were taken to the nearest food city to buy ingredients under the supervision of members of the project committee, guided by the Home Science teacher of the school. The winners were gifted with stationeries and vouchers as gifts. All the participants were certified with participation certificates.
As the 2nd segment of the third phase, “සෙනෙහසේ දෑත්” was implemented at Municipal Maternity Home, Modara donating dry ration packets to pregnant mothers which are well portioned, safe and nutritious as appropriate on pregnancy health and concerning their financial difficulties also in the current economic crisis. Many children are born underweight and in ill health, a preventable manifestation of maternal malnutrition during pregnancy and their nutritional status is also unacceptably poor.
The very first step to the healthiness of newly born babies is the protection of pregnant mothers and maternal nutrition. In the journey of a powerful movement of fighting for fairness, access and affordability of nutritious food for everyone through “සෙනෙහසේ දෑත්” we aimed to raise maternity health and contribute to children’s health to be better and healthy future generation.
