Michelle Obama once remarked, "there is no limit to what we, as women, can accomplish". Women business entrepreneurs have undoubtedly been recognized for their significant contributions to the development of most nations over the years. Yet, as it is difficult for women to get assistance to go beyond, the economic participation of women has decreased in Sri Lanka. Due to this, there is a need to encourage women to achieve their aspirations.
As LEOs, we choose women who are involved in business, with the aim of inspiring and empowering them in addition to advocating them to responsible organizations to address their entrepreneurial needs.
We, the Leo Club of University of Colombo, Leo District 306 C1, selected Watapuluwa village in the Kandy district for the third phase “Liya Saviya” of project Diyani 6.0 as self-employed women in this area were expecting assistance to expand their businesses.
This program commenced on the 25th of March 2023, with the participation of self-employed women. A fair to showcase their products with the participation of members of women’s society and an agricultural society in Watapuluwa, together with a motivational session, which was led by a representative from the Women's Development Center, Kandy has been organized in this phase. The session was really productive as it provided the participants with highly valuable insight into different aspects of conducting a business, and our resource person was able to discuss significant challenges and areas to be developed as well. Additionally, three participants who met the criteria to select the best women entrepreneurs were awarded gifts.
Melinda Gates says that “when we invest in women, we invest in a powerful source of global development”. We were glad to learn that our beneficiaries were given the opportunity to strengthen their self-confidence and expand their businesses further by introducing them to the women’s development centre which ensured the sustainability of the project "Diyani 6.0".
