Be Their Vision 7.0 | Phase 02 |
In today’s context, Sri Lanka also commonly reports cases of vision impairment and it is stated that 9.3 million Sri Lankans have some form of vision impairment. Lack of proper awareness is one of the major reasons for this prevalence of eye diseases.
In light of this, the second phase of the project, ‘’Be Their Vision 7.0’’ was carried out to enhance the Sri Lankan community's awareness of vision impairment and potential preventative measures. Accordingly, the eye awareness session was conducted on the 5th of March 2023 at Hunupitiya Wijesundararama Purana Viharaya with the presence of nearly 100 participants.
On the 5th morning, the project committee members together with the teachers of the Sunday school of Hunupitiya Wijesundararama Purana Viharaya gathered at the temple. They did all the necessary arrangements in the Dharma Hall to accommodate the students and the keynote speaker to conduct the session. The support and hospitality provided by the chief incumbent Thero and the staff were admirable. Precisely at 8.30 am, with the arrival of the keynote speaker Dr. Kumudu Anthony; Senior Registrar of Ophthalmology National Eye Hospital, the welcome speech was delivered by the project chairperson Leo Gayana Nethmi. From there onwards, the awareness session continued for the next hour.
Dr. Kumudu Anthony dedicated the initial parts of her lecture to elucidating various eye diseases, their causes, and their basic symptoms. It assists in identifying such a vision impairment at its preliminary stage, possible consequences of neglecting them as well as possible treatments to cure those ailments. The latter part of her lecture emphasized the fact of how crucial it is to maintain eye health and how eyes can be kept healthy. Moreover, the attentive listening of the students well complemented the smooth flow of the session.
Finally, the session marked its end following the token of appreciation and vote of thanks done by Leo Haritha Vimukthi and Leo Senari Nadugala respectively. The insightful and positive feedback received from the students showed the worthiness and success of the phase.
