Helping Hands – Project Kruthaguna 5.0

Senior citizens are an integral part of a country. Sri Lanka is one of the fastest-aging countries in the world. As a developing country, 12.3% of the population is aged 55 or older in Sri Lanka, making it the country with the highest proportion of older adults in South Asia. They are a needed and valued community in our society.

Currently Sri Lanka is facing a huge economic crisis. With the county’s foreign reserves depleted, the nationalized healthcare system cannot afford to import medicine and medical supplies in sufficient quantities. Sri Lanka relies on imports for about 85% of its pharmaceutical needs and about 80% of its medical supplies. Therefore, most of the hospitals in Sri Lanka lack medicines to treat their patients. This has highly affected the health of the citizens over 55 years as they face many health conditions with their age. Considering all these issues, drug donation is very effective to avoid drug shortage to some extent. Identifying this need, ‘’Helping Hands’’ the 2nd phase of project Kruthaguna 5.0 was successfully held on 26th February 2023 at Colombo South Teaching Hospital, Kalubowila, Dehiwala.

Ward 25 in Colombo South Teaching Hospital has many patients who have been admitted to the ward to do the surgery and some patients are post operative ones. Majority of patients in this ward are over 55 years and it is a male surgical ward. Normally people who come to the government hospital to have their surgery are not economically stable. And also, there are patients who come from all ethnicities to this hospital. Both pre operative and post operative patients need medicinal therapy and the hospital system is running out of essential medicines. So, this benefits all the communities. Therefore, the issues mentioned above became the reason to select this hospital and ward.

Mrs. D. P. K. Manamperi, the special grade nursing officer of ward 25 of the hospital helped us through out the 2nd phase helping us to identify the basic needs of the patients. We donated few essential medicines and clothing materials for the patients to get dressed for surgeries. Leos and non-Leos participated in this giving their enormous support. We would like to thank ‘’Expo Airline Management’’ for being our official gold partner helping us to make this phase more successful. The generous timely activity carried out through ‘’Helping Hands’’ was admired by all the healthcare team member of Kalubowila Teaching Hospital including, the Deputy Director, Consultant Physician of ward 25 and the nursing officers of ward 25. We would like to extend our sincere gratitude to all who helped us throughout.
