World Health Organization's data shows that at least 2.2 billion of the world's population have a near or distant vision impairment. Among those, there are at least 1 billion, which is almost half that could have been prevented or has yet to be addressed. Eye screening will direct to the easy detention of near or distant vision impairment and can be corrected through spectacles in most cases. But in many parts of the world, millions suffer from poor vision due to a lack of resources. This can significantly impact their quality of life, affecting everything from their ability to work to their overall well-being.
The Leo club of the University of Colombo stepped forward with the project "Be Their Vision" for the 7th consecutive time to safeguard the vision of the Sri Lankan community. After successfully completing two phases, the third phase of the project; "Care first" was ready to be implemented. An eye screening program followed by a spectacles donation camp was the core idea of this phase. On the 05th of march 2023, the committee members arrived at Hunupitiya Wijesundararama Purana Viharaya for ground arrangements and after a few minutes, the opticians reached the temple with their equipment. The well-equipped and professional opticians started to set up their eye-testing equipment, such as charts and machines to measure visual acuity.
The initial arrangement was done inside the dharma hall per the instructions from the chief incumbent monk and Sunday school teachers. Then the eye screening program officially opened with upper section students of the Sunday school and ended up screening all the students, monks, teachers and parents. Those who were diagnosed with refractive errors were listed to offer free customized glasses.
After customizing the spectacle for the diagnosed parties, the spectacle donation camp was held on the 26th of march 2023. All diagnosed with refractive error received their pair of spectacles, and their happy faces reflected the joy of seeing the world without blurred ends. With that, the third phase of the project, "Be Their Vision 7.0" concluded with many good words from the participants. This appreciation was the ultimate proof of the success of the phase, and we believe that we did help the community to see the light of the world.
