Sureki Hetak phase 01
“Accidents, and particularly street and highway accidents do not happen – they are caused.” – Ernest Greenwood.
Leo Club of the University Of Colombo is committed to doing good for society. We are committed to helping the people of the society by implementing various projects to ensure safety. Road accidents are a topic which is widely talking around the world today. About 1.3 million people die annually from road accidents in the world. The project "Sureki Hetak" is organized by the Leo Club of the University Of Colombo for the sixth time with the aim of reducing these accidents and securing the lives of pedestrians.
As the first step, our group decided to paint road signs on the walls of a school and conduct an awareness session about road accidents. For this purpose, we selected Wp/Jaya/ Ambatale Tikiri Kumara Vidyalaya, Mulleriyawa New town, because there is a high risk of road accidents occurring around this school.
Road signs were drawn on the school wall in a way that children could easily understand through paintings for five days. We did this to add more sustainability as another purpose of our project. The students, pedestrians and drivers have gained awareness through the work of painting road signs. Through the awareness program about road accidents, students got guidance on how to avoid road accidents. The awareness program was held on 17/03/2023 at Tikiri Kumara Vidyalaya, Ambatale. At 8.30 a.m., Mr. Viraj De Silva: traffic OIC of Angoda police station, gave a meaningful lecture to the children. Here, the Police officer explained to the children the causes of road accidents, how to travel on the road, and the road signs understanding.
Lions of the Kotikawaththa Excellence Leo Club participated in our program and they gave brochures about road signs and road safety to the students. They also made a monetary donation for the next phases of our project.
8, 9, 10 years old students have participated in our program because they are small children and they can't understand road safety and road accidents. Students were very actively involved with the program and gave positive feedback at the end of the program. Thus, phase 01 of the "Sureki Hetak'' project accomplished the social mission by giving students knowledge about road safety and road accidents. We would like to thank the project chairperson, Leo Chanduni Paranagama, project secretary, Leo Malshi Karunarathne, project treasurer, Dilshan Peiris and our team members who worked tirelessly to accomplish this task.
