Sureki Hetak 6.0 Phase 02
"Cyberbullies can hide behind a mask of anonymity online and do not need direct physical access to their victims to do unimaginable harm."
– Anna Maria Chavez
The Leo Club of the University of Colombo always carries out a great social mission by implementing various projects for the safety of society. We hope to build a safe society for everyone while ensuring the sustainable existence of society.
The second phase of the "Sureki Hetak" project organized by the Leo Club of the University of Colombo for the 6th time was held on 29/03/2023 at Prof.Ediriweera Sarachchandra school at 8.30 am.
With the online education system and lockdown, students focused on studying through digital devices and social media platforms. During this situation, students were not able to separate what is correct and wrong. For this reason, students around the world as well as in Sri Lanka are inspired to do cyberbullying. According to the reports of UNICEF, it is mentioned
"More than a third of young people in 30 countries report being a victim of online bullyingU-Report highlights the prevalence of cyberbullying and its impact on young people."
Considering the above facts, our team decided to conduct an awareness session about cyberbullying for a targeted beneficiary group of students. Here our primary intention was to protect students from cyberbullying by giving them knowledge about cyberbullying. The awareness session about cyberbullying was held in Prof.Ediriweera Sarachchandra school on 2023/03/29 from 8.30 to 10.30 headed by CID women sub-inspector Saduni Tharangika Silva with the attending 108 students. In this program, what is cyberbullying, its possible forms, solutions to them, steps that can be taken to prevent cyberbullying, the laws on cyberbullying, recent incidents of cyberbullying etc., were explained to the students in an impressive presentation by the CID Women sub-inspector.
Since students aged 14-18 participated in this program, these facts were very important to them. Students in the age group of 14-18 years often use digital devices and social media more. Then cyberbullying happens without their knowledge. Therefore, it was a very useful and practical program for our beneficiaries group. We are very grateful to the project chairperson Leo Chanduni Paranagama, secretary Leo Malshi Karunarathne, treasure Leo Dilshan Peris and the committee of UOC Leo Club who are very committed to doing this awareness session, which is one step that can be taken to protect the society by educating the society about cyberbullying.
